Cabbage Thoran  is one of the most prominent side dishes made at every house hold in Kerala and every sadya ( vegetarian feast ) will  have cabbage thoran as a side dish. Be it a wedding sadya or a onasadya, it’s a must to have.

Thoran is a indispensable side dish in Kerala cuisine. Beans thoran, carrot thoran, drumstick leaves thoran are the most famous thorans made. Only a handful of ingredients needed to make thoran. Grated coconut is ground together with turmeric powder, chilly powder, cumin seeds and garlic, and then added to the cabbage. Finally a tempering made from coconut oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry and added to elevate the flavor profile of the dish.

Cabbage Thoran  Recipe..


  • Cabbage – 300 gms, chopped
  • Coconut oil – 2 Tbsp
  • Shallots – 5  each, sliced
  • Green chilly -2 each, slit
  • Grated coconut – 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Chilly powder -1/4 Tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Garlic cloves – 2 each
  • Curry leaves -1 sprig
  • Mustard seeds -1/2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1/2 Tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Wash and chop the cabbage and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in medium high heat.
  3. Slide in shallots and saute for a minute.
  4. Add chopped cabbage and continue to stir fry on medium heat for 5 minutes.
  5. In the mean time, grind together grated coconut, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, garlic cloves and chilly powder.
  6. Just crush it the food processor and remove.
  7. Mix in the coconut mix and salt into the cabbage.
  8. Sprinkle 2-3 tbsp. of water, cover with a lid and cook until the cabbage is tender.
  9. To make a tempering, heat 1 Tbsp of coconut oil, crackle mustard seeds first.
  10. Then add curry leaves and dried chilly to it.
  11. Remove the tempering from the fire and mix in cooked cabbage.
  12. Give a good mixing and adjust the seasoning.
  13. Serve with boiled rice.
