Short Description

Tomatoes are botanically fruits belonging to berry family and is scientifically known as Solanum lycopersicum. In the culinary world they are classified as a vegetables because of the acidic or tangy flavor. The fleshy vegetable can be eaten raw or cooked in a variety of ways.

It is available throughout the year. Tomato is one of the largest grown vegetable in the world.

Nutritional Value:

Tomatoes have low fat content making it a preferred dietary vegetable. They are also rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A and anti-oxidant lycopene.

How to Store:

The fresh tomatoes are generally refrigerated or kept ‘over-the-counter’ in a basket or bowl lined with paper. This helps to keep the taste and texture of the fruit intact. But, if you plan to keep it for a longer time, it is advisable to keep in the fridge, though it will reduce the flavour. Tomatoes are highly perishable produce, which is why there are lots of preserved varieties available in the market. In addition to the fresh ones, there are canned or tinned tomatoes, pureed, frozen tomatoes and dried ones.

There are more than 10,000 types of tomatoes based on the size and colour. Some of the common varieties are:

Beefsteak: They are large tomatoes with lower water content. It is the perfect choice of tomatoes to be used while making sandwiches and burgers because of the large size and the ability to hold up while cutting, without getting mushy.

Roma: Roma tomatoes are also known as plum tomatoes or Italian plum tomatoes. They also have lower water content, though juicer than beef steak and have fewer seeds. These types of tomatoes are used for processing- making sauces and canned tomatoes.

Cherry Tomatoes: These are small, sweet and juicy variety of tomatoes. These are the favourite ones for chefs while making salads.

Grape Tomatoes: These are similar to plum tomatoes, but they are smaller and more oblong than plum tomatoes.
