Today I am going share with you is an excellent dish recipe, which is very close to every Keralites heart, which is Tomato Curry/Thakkali Curry Recipe.

Tomato Curry/Thakkali Curry Recipe is made from cooking diced tomatoes in a mild coconut based mildly spiced gravy. It is very versatile, you can enjoy it as your breakfast side dish or for lunch or dinner. Goes with almost traditional breakfast dishes from Kerala or with rice or even chapathi.

Tomato Curry/Thakkali Curry Recipe

Ingredients

  • Tomato – 400 gms, big dices
  • Oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds -1/2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Dry chilli – 2 each, halved
  • Onion– 1 medium, chopped
  • Ginger – 1 Tsp, chopped
  • Garlic -1 Tsp, chopped
  • Green chilly -2 each, slit
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 Tsp
  • Chilly powder -1/2 Tsp
  • Cumin powder -1/4 Tsp
  • Grated coconut -1 cup
  • Cumin seeds -1/2 Tsp
  • Shallots -2 each
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves -1 Tbsp, chopped

Directions

  1. Wash and cut tomatoes into big dices.
  2. Chop onion, ginger, garlic and set aside.
  3. Crush together grated coconut, cumin seeds and shallots in a food processor and set aside.
  4. In a medium sized pan, heat oil over medium heat.
  5. Once the oil starts to smoke, add mustard seeds and let it crackle.
  6. Add dry chilly and curry leaves and cook for a minute.
  7. Now add chopped onion and saute for a minutes.
  8. Slide in chopped ginger and garlic and continue to cook.
  9. When the onions are translucent, add powdered spices.
  10. Cook the powdered spices on a slow fire until the raw flavor goes off.
  11. At this point, add tomatoes and stir fry for a minute.
  12. Add crushed coconut-spice mix, salt and add 1/2 cup of water.
  13. Bring to boil and reduce the flame to simmer.
  14. Cook for 7-8 minutes, adjust the seasoning.
  15. Finish with chopped coriander leaves.
