Therali Appam or Kottappam or Kumbilappam- Diwali Special Sweet Dish

Diwali, the festival of lights. Like any other festivals in India, diwali is also not complete without any sweets. Sweets have always been the highlight of all the festivals in India, sweets add so much of enthusiasm and spirit to celebration. Therali appam or Kumbilappam is one of the famous sweets made during diwali celebration and it’s also one of the healthiest sweet dishes available in India.

  • Rice flour- 1 cup
  • Jaggery -200 gms (1/2 cup melted)
  • Banana -2 each, smaller one
  • Ghee – 1 Tbsp
  • Cardamom– 1/2 Tsp, crushed
  • Fresh bay leaves as needed


  1. Roast the rice flour in a kadai and set aside.
  2. Melt the jaggery, strain and set this aside.
  3. In a bowl mix together rice flour, melted jaggery, banana, ghee, cardamom.
  4. Mix until all the ingredients have come together.
  5. Make cones out of fresh bay leaves, as shown in the picture.
  6. Fill the cones with the mixture.
  7. Steam cook the mixture until done (10-15 minutes).
  8. Serve hot or cold
