Without any doubt I can easily say that Tamarind chutney is the most beloved and celebrated chutney in India. Tamarind chutney is a perfect accompaniment for most of the snacks in India, be it a chaat or a samosa, pakora, dahi vada, bhel puri or any other snacks. What tomato ketchup to the west is what tamarind chutney to Indians.

So many variations of tamarind chutney can be found in India, tamarind chutney is made differently in different states. The color, taste and flavor varies from state to state.


Tamarind Chutney Recipe


  • Tamarind – 250 gms
  • Jaggery – 200 gms
  • Water – 500 ml
  • Ginger – 20, crushed
  • Chilly powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Black salt – 1/2 Tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Soak tamarind in lukewarm water for 30 minutes.
  2. After 30 minutes, mash the tamarind inside water.
  3. Transfer the tamarind into a pot, add water and bring to a boil.
  4. Now add jaggery and reduce the fire to simmering.
  5. Add ginger, cumin powder, chilly powder, salt and continue to simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Strain to remove the pulp and let it cool down on room temperature.
  7. Refrigerate and use as you want. Chutney will keep well in the refrigerator for 2-3 months.
