Pepper Chicken Kerala Style Recipe

What is so unique about this dish is that the wonderful flavor of freshly ground black pepper added to the chicken at different stages of cooking. I just love the flavor and taste of freshly ground black pepper. Well, black pepper is  spicy, but who cares? When chicken is cooked together with a perfect masala mix which is predominant of black pepper. If you don’t believe then you should definitely try this at home and experience it by yourself!

Pepper chicken goes very well with rice or Kerala paratha. This easy pepper chicken is a very choice during rainy season and it’s very healthy and delicious as well. You tweak this recipe according your flavor profile and enjoy..


  • Chicken with bone- 600 gms
  • Oil- 1 Tbsp
  • Onion -2 large, sliced
  • Ginger– 1 Tbsp, crushed
  • Garlic – 1 Tbsp, crushed
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Green chilly- 4 pcs
  • Coriander powder- 1 Tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Lemon juice – 1 Tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper


  1. Wash and cut chicken into medium sized (curry cut) pieces.
  2. Marinate the chicken pieces with the powdered masalas, salt , black pepper and oil for 30 minutes.
  3. Take the chicken in a medium sized pot and cover with a lid
  4.  Cook on a slow fire until almost done(3/4 th).
  5. In the mean time, in a different kadai/ skillet,  heat oil.
  6. Add curry leaves and saute for a minute.
  7. Add sliced onion and  continue to saute for 2 minutes.
  8. Add green chilly, crushed giner and garlic now.
  9. Add the powdered spices.
  10. Continue to saute until dark drown in color.
  11. Add the cooked chicken , freshly ground black pepper and mix well.
  12. Cover with a lid and cook on a slow fire for 10 minutes.
  13. Add lemon juice and finish with  freshly ground black pepper.
  14. Serve hot.
