Oratti / Rice Bread is a famed flat bread from Kerala and it’s made of rice flour. Oratti is served for breakfast and as well as for lunch and dinner.There are two types of rice flat breads which are so celebrated in Kerala– one is Oratti and the other one is Pathiri. Oratti rule the southern part of Kerala where as the pathiri is more famous towards the North-Malabar region.

Is Oratti / Rice Bread good for health? Consuming rice flour dishes are not bad for health and rice flour is rich in fiber and it’s proven enhance liver functioning. Well, I think the best thing about rice flour is that it’s gluten free. So, those who are celiac rice flour is very good option.

Oratti / Rice Bread Recipe


  • Rice flour – 250 gms
  • Water 150 ml
  • Grated coconut – 100 gms
  • Cumin seeds – 1 Tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for gridling.


  1. Boil the water in a sauce pan and set aside.
  2. Take rice flour in a clean bowl, add water little by little and mix the flour using a whisk.
  3. Mix well to get a smooth batter of flowing consistency.
  4. Add cumin seeds, salt and grated coconut and mix well.
  5. Rest the batter for 15 minutes.
  6. Heat the griddle, apply oil to prevent the oratti from sticking.
  7. Pour the batter into the medium hot griddle using a spoon and spread to a round shape.
  8. When the first is cooked, flip and cook the other side as well.
  9. Serve hot.
