Ingredients

  • Chicken – 1kg
  • Coconut oil- 1 Tbsp
  • Cinnamon – 1/2 inch
  • Bay leaves – 2 each
  • Cloves – 1/2 Tsp
  • Cardamom– 1/2 Tsp, crushed
  • Onion – 2 medium, chopped
  • Gingergarlic paste – 1 Tsp
  • Green chilly -2 chopped
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 Tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Garam masala -1/2 Tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Tomato -2 medium sized, chopped
  • Coconut milk -1 cup
  • Poppy seeds – 1 Tbsp, paste
  • Curry leaves -2 sprigs

Directions

  1. Cut the chicken into medium sized pieces and set aside.
  2. Soak the poppy seed in warm and set aside.
  3. Heat up vessel and add coconut oil.
  4. Fry off cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and bay leaves.
  5. Add chopped onion and cook for a minute.
  6. Add gingergarlic paste and chopped green chilly.
  7. Cook until the raw flavour goes off.
  8. Now add turmeric, coriander powder, garam masala and chilly.
  9. Cook the spices on slow for 2 minutes.
  10. Now add chicken pieces and mix well.
  11. Keep the flame on medium and cook for 2 minutes.
  12. Add chopped tomatoes and cook for a minute.
  13. Then add coconut milk, curry leaves and salt.
  14. Let it come to a boil and cover with lid.
  15. Keeping the flame on low, cook the chicken until soft and tender.
  16. Blend the poppy seeds in to food processor and mix in the chicken.
  17. Adjust the seasoning and finish with more curry leaves.
  18. Enjoy your Onam Special Coconut Chicken with rice or any bread of your choice.
