Nadan Mathi Fry/ Sardines Fry

Mathi/Sardine  fry is one of the most common fried fish recipes of Kerala. Mathi fish is almost available throughout the year and this everyday fish is fried at every households – Keralites love for mathi fry is as famous as anything else.

  • Mathi/ Sardines – 12 nos
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 Tsp
  • Garlic – 1 Tsp, crushed
  • Lemon juice- 1 Tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying


  1. Clean,  score (diagonal cut on the skin) both the sides, and wash the fish.
  2. To make the fish  marination, combine together turmeric, chilly, salt, crushed garlic and lemon juice.
  3. Rub the marination all the fish evenly and allow it to rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Heat oil in a fry pan, slowly add the fish to the medium hot oil.
  5. When the first is cooked and the skin is crispy, turn over and cook the other side.
  6. Fry the fish in batches, doing this will make sure the fish is crispy and the texture is maintained.
  7. Serve hot.
