Macher Jhol (Bengali Style Fish Curry) is one of the most celebrated fish curries from India, my personal favorite too.

Macher Jhol (Bengali Style Fish Curry) is made with fish cubes simmered in a spicy mustard broth with potatoes and eggplant.

I was absolutely desperate to try out this recipe myself and I could not believe the fact to myself that I have been forgetting it for ages. Finally, finally today I have got the ingredients, I found myself time and made it. It came out absolutely perfect, the way I wanted it and the way it was supposed to be. I was very happy with flavor, the color and the over all feel of the dish.

1.Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric.

2. Fry in mustard oil and remove.

3.In the same oil, fry potatoes and remove.

4.Fry eggplant and remove.

5.Fry onion seeds, green chilly

6.Add potatoes.

7.Add water

8.Add cumin powder, turmeric powder.

9.Add fish and cook till done. Finish with chopped coriander leaves .

Macher Jhol (Bengali Style Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • Fish -500 gms, cubes
  • Potatoes – 200 gms, wedges cut
  • Eggplant – 200 gms, strips
  • Mustard oil- 2 Tbsp
  • Onion seeds – 1 Tsp
  • Green chilly – 2 chopped
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 Tsp
  • Water
  • Coriander leaves – 1 Tbsp, chopped
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Cut the fish and marinate with turmeric and salt, let it sit for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat up a skillet and add mustard oil.
  3. Slowly place the marinated fish cubes one at a time into the hot oil.
  4. Sear the fish ( just give color) on all sides and remove, set aside.
  5. Into the same oil, add potatoes and fry for 3-4 minutes and remove.
  6. Add eggplant or brinjal into the same oil and fry for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  7. When the oil is hot, add onion seeds and fry for a minute.
  8. Then add green chillies and cumin powder.
  9. Cook on low fire for a minute.
  10. Now add the potatoes, eggplant and water.
  11. Once boiling, reduce the flame and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  12. Add the fish pieces and continue to simmer until done.
  13. Add chopped coriander leaves.
  14. Adjust the seasoning and serve hot.

Note: I have used salmon for this recipe, you can substitute and use any fish of your choice.
