Yet another pickle or achar recipe from Kerala. Kerala Style Lemon Pickle is the most common and most popular pickle in Kerala. No sadya in Kerala is complete without lemon pickle and in fact most of the house holds use lemon pickle on a daily basis. Has anyone tried kanjithoran-lemon pickle and pappadam or pappad combination so far? Yup, I can bet you, one of best,simple and traditional combinations one can ever try while you are in Kerala.

Like any other pickle recipes, lemon pickle also has many regional variations available. I personally like the spicy version of lemon pickle with lots of mustards seeds and curry leaves. The recipe I am going to share with you today is most common form of Kerala Style Lemon Pickle.

I can’t live without pickles! Can you? I need pickle (any thing pickled!) always with my meal. Let me ask you, are pickles really good for health? Yes, home made pickles are proven to be good for health (I said home made!). Well, it’s proven that the good micro organism help protect food from spoiling, good for our gut too. But, too much of pickle consumption may cause stomach discomfort and can also upset digestive system. So, watch out for the quantity of pickle intake in your daily meal.

Kerala Style Lemon Pickle

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Wash and wipe the lemons with kitchen towl.
  2. Chop the lemons into small sized cubes.
  3. Heat a kadai or skillet, add oil.
  4. Keep the flame to low and add chopped lemons.
  5. Cook for a couple of minutes and remove.
  6. In the same skillet, heat up oil again.
  7. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves and let the flavor to infuse.
  8. Add chopped ginger and garlic, keep the flame to a low.
  9. Once it starts to turn brown, add powdered spices and cook well.
  10. Now add lemon and cook for another 10 minutes.
  11. Adjust the seasoning and remove from the fire.
  12. Let it cool down and store them in air tight containers.

Note: For storing, use air tight non-metallic container, metal might react with acidic medium.
