Kerala Pepper Beef is an amazing beef preparation from Kerala, a very famous preparation during Christmas season.

Beef cubes are marinated with powdered spices and then slow cooked in an aromatic and spicy gravy with abundance of coconut.

1.Marinate the beef cubes with powdered spices.

2.Heat up coconut oil.

3. Fry coconut flakes until golden brown.

4.Remove and set aside.

5.Add mustard seeds, curry leaves and dry chilly.

6.Add onion

7.Cook until soft.

8.Add powdered spices and cook well.

9.Add marinated beef cubes. Cook over a high heat for 3 minutes.

10.Add water. Bring to simmer.

11. Cover with a lid and cook until done.

12.Add crushed black pepper corns.

13.Cook for another 5 minutes over medium heat.

Ingredients

  • Coconut oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Fresh coconut flakes (diced) – 1/4 cup
  • Mustard seeds – 1 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Dried chilly – 2 each
  • Onion – 2 medium, sliced
  • Ginger and garlic paste – 1 Tsp
  • Crushed chilly flakes – 1 Tsp
  • Crushed black pepper – 1 1/2 Tsp
  • Turmeric – 1 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 1/2 Tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 1/2  Tsp
  • Garam masala -1 Tsp
  • Beef – 600 gms
  • Salt to taste
  • Water – 2 cups or as needed

Directions

  1. First step is to marinate the beef with 1/2 Tsp each of turmeric, salt, chilly and coriander powder.
  2. Let it marinate for 30 minutes.
  3. Heat up a cooking vessel, add coconut oil.
  4. Add coconut flakes and cook until light golden brown.
  5. Remove from the oil and set aside.
  6. In the same oil, add mustard seeds and let it crackle.
  7. Add dried chilly and curry leaves.
  8. Cook for a minute and add onion.
  9. Over a medium flame, cook onions until light golden brown in color.
  10. Add ginger and paste, cook for a minute.
  11. Then add  crushed chilly flakes, turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder and garam masala.
  12. Stir fry until the raw flavor goes off.
  13. Now add marinated beef and cook over a high flame for 2 minutes.
  14. Add a cup of hot water and bring to a boil.
  15. Once boiling, reduce to simmer, cover with a lid.
  16. Cook over simmering flame until the beef is tender.
  17. Remove the lid, add crushed black pepper corns.
  18. Adjust the seasoning and cook for a minute.
  19. Serve hot with rice or choice of your Indian bread.
