Kerala is blessed with a very long stretch of coastal strip. Keralites are known for their love for seafood and huge varieties  of fish and seafood are available through out the season. But, Kambu or Mullet or Red Mullet is a fresh water fish (even found in sea water ) , which is known for it’s delicious flavor and nutritive values. Kanambu / Mullet Fish Curry is one of the easiest fish curries you can ever make.

Kanambu / Mullet Fish Curry is a coconut and spices based fish curry with the tanginess of tamarind pulp. Grated coconut, chilly powder, turmeric powder, uluva podi (fenugreek powder) and garlic are ground together to a smooth paste and fish pieces are cooked in it.

Kanambu / Mullet Fish Curry Recipe

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Clean, wash and cut fish into bi sized cubes.
  2. Soak tamarind in luke warm water for 10 minutes and squeeze to remove the pulp.
  3. Grind together grated coconut, garlic, chilly powder and turmeric to smooth paste.
  4. In a skillet, take the coconut mixture  and add half cup water.
  5. When it comes to boil, add the fish pieces, fenugreek powder, salt and tamarind pulp.
  6. Let it cook for 2 minutes and add sliced tomato.
  7. Cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes on a slow fire.
  8. Remove the cover and let the gravy thicken to a desired consistency.
  9. Adjust the seasoning and serve hot with rice.
