Diwali, the festival of lights, conceivably the most prominent festivals in Indian Hindu culture.  Diwali or deepavali celebrated by decorating every house holds and streets with lights and fire crackers are a must; everyone lights up fire crackers, sing, dance and festivities last for the entire day. Every state in India celebrates diwali in their own way or the style of celebration is unique in every state. Deepavali or diwali celebration does not limit to India only, but it is celebrated all across the globe.

And, for many of us diwali is a festival of coming together; friends, relatives, neighbors and well wishers come together and celebrate the auspicious day of diwali.  No celebration is complete without food; like the style celebration, the food is also unique and different to every region of the country.

During the diwali festival, therali appam or kumbilappam is the most popular sweet among  Keralites.


  • Rice flour- 2 cup
  • Jaggery -400 gms (1/2 cup melted)
  • Banana -2 each, smaller one
  • Ghee – 1 Tbsp
  • Cardamom– 1/2 Tsp, crushed
  • Fresh bay leaves -10-15 leaves


  1. Roast the rice flour in a kadai and set aside.
  2. Melt the jaggery, strain and set this aside.
  3. In a bowl mix together rice flour, melted jaggery, banana, ghee, cardamom.
  4. Mix until all the ingredients have come together.
  5. Make cones out of fresh bay leaves, as shown in the picture.
  6. Fill the cones with the mixture.
  7. Steam cook the mixture until done (10-15 minutes).
  8. Serve hot or cold
