Green Peas Masala, South Indian Style

Green peas is cooked in a rich onion and tomato gravy with spices and given tempering with mustard seeds and dry chilly to finish.

Green peas masala is a wonderful side for breakfast dishes such as appam, dosa and also goes very well with chapathi, phulka or even goes very good with rice dishes. This is recipe is a typical South Indian style  recipe and I have made  it less spicy, you can adjust the spices according to your taste.

  • Fresh or frozen green peas – 2 cups
  • Oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Onion – 1 medium, chopped
  • Tomatoes – 2, chopped
  • Green chilly – 2 each
  • Ginger – 1 Tsp, chopped
  • Garlic – 1 Tbsp, chopped
  • Chilly powder – 1 Tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 Tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – 1 Tbsp, chopped
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Dry chilly – 3 pcs
  • Water – 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste


  1. Soak green peas for 30 minutes.
  2. Pressure cook green peas for 2 whistles and set aside.
  3. Whilst the green peas are getting done, in a skillet, heat oil and saute onions.
  4. Add ginger, garlic and green chilly and continue to saute.
  5. When onions are soft, add powdered masalas such as chilly, coriander and turmeric powder.
  6. When the raw goes off, add tomatoes.
  7. Cook until the tomatoes mushy.
  8. Add the cooked green peas to it.
  9. Add half a cup of hot water and cook for another five more minutes.
  10. Heat oil in different skillet, splutter mustard seeds and fry the dry chilly (tempering).
  11. Add the tempering to the green peas.
  12. Adjust the seasoning , add chopped coriander leaves.
  13. Your green peas masala is ready now.
