This healthy and soothing Gothambu Kanji / Wheat Porridge is made from cooking broken wheat grains, grated coconut, fenugreek and shallots in water. Pickle, pappadam  or a thoran or aviyal normally accompany kanji. A superb comfort food which can made with not much effort. During your cold winter days a bowl of kanji can come handy.

I realize how important it is to stick to my Kerala roots. Being a Keralite makes me proud and furthermore I try to include all those traditional typical Malayalee dishes into my diet pretty often. Gothambu Kanji / Wheat Porridge is one of those dishes I cherish, which makes me happy and my tummy happy.

I normally prefer kanji for dinner because of the fact that kanji feels  light at stomach yet fulfilling. Kanji and weight reduction- it’s proven that including kanji into diet plan can help you reduce weight. So, why wait?

  1. Wash wheat grains well under cold running water.
  2. Soak the wheat grains at least for 30 minutes prior to cooking.
  3. Drain and set aside.
  4. In a pot, take all the ingredients in a pot, add water.
  5. Bring it to a boil first, then reduce the flame and keep it on simmering.
  6. Cover with a lid and continue to cook.
  7. It should take about 20-25 minutes.
  8. When cooked, adjust the seasoning.
  9. Serve hot with pappadam, achar and or a thoran or aviyal.

Note: Soaking the wheat grains prior to cooking, makes the cooking faster and as well gives more body to the kanji. You can even pressure cook wheat grain for about two whistles.
