Drumstick Leaves & Garlic Soup

Drumstick Leaves & Garlic Soup is a typical Kerala style soup made with drum stick leaves, garlic, onion, tomato, green chilly and Indian spices. This spicy and flavorful soup has got a prominent flavor of garlic in it.

Every Keralites wants grow a drumstick tree at their home, thanks to the medicinal  properties and nutritious values of both the drumstick and drumstick leaves. My mother used to cook drumstick and drumstick leaves thoran, growing up as a child I never used to like anything made of drumstick leaves or drumstick.  The reason being is because of the after-bitter-taste of drumstick leaves. But, with time I understood the medicinal and nutritional properties and I started to like it and now I would not mind having it every day.

Drumstick leaves are superbly nutritious, very rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Protein and Potassium.

Except the stem, every part of the drumstick tree  is used, such as drumstick leaves, drumsticks and the drumstick flower. Among the drumstick leaves, drumstick and drumstick flower, drumstick is used in many South Indian dishes. Sambar, drumstick thoran, drumstick curry are just to name a few…

Here, I am sharing a special recipe which I have prepared using drumstick leaves and garlic as the prominent ingredients. Do try out this Drumstick Leaves & Garlic Soup recipe and let me know how it turned out for you.

Drumstick Leaves & Garlic Soup Recipe


  • Drumstick leaves- 400 gms
  • Red onion– 75 gms, diced
  • Water- 750 ml
  • Tomato– 75 gms, diced
  • Garlic– 25 gms, crushed
  • Green chilly – 2 pcs
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Turmeric – 1/2 Tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Whole black pepper corns – 1 Tsp


  1. Remove the drumstick leaves and discard the thick stems.
  2. Dice onion and tomatoes and keep aside.
  3. In a medium sized pan, take drumstick leaves, onion, tomato, garlic, green chilly and add water.
  4. Bring it boil, reduce to low simmering, add salt and black pepper corns.
  5. Reduce it to three fourth. (Cook for about 10-12 minutes)
  6. Strainer the soup using a strainer, press the extract to remove as much liquid from the pan as possible.
  7. Reserve some extract from the soup garnishing.

Take drumstick leaves, onion, tomato, green chilly, crushed garlic and water in a pan.

Bring to boil and reduce it to three fourth.
