Dhal Curry, Kerala Style

This recipe is a South Indian take of the most famous Indian Dhal curry. Dhal is the Indian word for lentils. This dish is heavenly and super flavorful. For many Indians dhal curry is a staple food. This dish very well with rice or chapathi or any Indian bread in reality.


  • Tuvar dhal – 200 gms
  • Tomato – 1, medium, chopped
  • Onion – 1 medium ,chopped
  • Coconut oil – 1 Tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Dry chilly- 2 nos
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Green chilly – 4 nos
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Water as needed
  • Salt to taste


  1. Wash dhal at least 3-4 times to remove the impurities.
  2. In a medium sized pot, add dhal and water (water should be just enough to cover the dhal)
  3. As it comes to a boil, add chopped onion, tomato, turmeric, chilly powder, green chilly and salt.
  4. On a simmering fire, let it cook until soft.
  5. In the mean time, heat oil  in a skillet.
  6. Crackle mustard seeds first and then add curry leaves and dry chilly.
  7. Add this to the dhal and stir in well.
  8. Adjust the seasoning and serve hot with rice or bread.
