Dal Chawal / Rice Dal Recipe is made by cooking dal and rice together in a mild Indian spiced gravy. I have profound memories of dal chawal. This is something I have grown up eating and this is something to which I can always relate myself to. I can spend the whole day talking about dal chawal- it’s so satisfying, so fulfilling and a very healthy dish as well.

Dal chawal is a staple for many in the sub-continent. Recently a friend mine has made it and it tasted super delicious. I have taken the recipe  and decided it make it myself. Well, I have never made chawal myself before, I just can’t figure why I have not tried it yet.  Even though I like the presence of green chilly in my  dal chawal, I have decided to omit the chilly as I was making it for the kids too. Came out really good and everyone enjoyed it..

Dal Chawal / Rice  Dal Recipe…

Ingredients

  • Rice basmati – 400 gms
  •  Tuvar dal – 100 gms
  • Onion – 1 medium, chopped
  • Tomato – 1 medium, chopped
  • vegetable oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Bay leaf – 1 each
  • Cloves – 3 each
  • Black pepper – 1/2 Tsp
  • Turmeric powder -1/2 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1/4 Tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/4 Tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1/4 Tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves – 1 Tbsp, chopped

Directions

  1. Wash rice, drain and set aside.
  2. In medium sized pot, heat oil.
  3. Stir in whole spices such as bay leaf, cloves and black pepper
  4. Let it infuse the flavor and remove them.
  5. Stir in chopped onion, tomato and saute.
  6. Sprinkle powdered spices and cook well.
  7. Once the powdered spices are cooked add tomatoes.
  8. Cook the tomatoes until mushy.
  9. Mix in the rice and tuvar dal and saute over medium high heat.
  10. When the rice and tuvar are  crispy reduce the fire to slow.
  11. Add hot water, salt and bring to boil.
  12. Bring it to simmering and cover with a lid.
  13. Cook until rice is done (20 minutes approximately).
  14. Serve hot.
