Healthy Dal Chapathi Recipe

Dal and chapathi combination is heavenly and there is nothing like it..Healthy Dal Chapathi recipe is  so simple and very easy to make.

Dal, the wholesomeness and heartiness of this rustic and  the most famous dish from India is beyond words. Dal and roti is staple for many Indians, from rich to poor- everyone likes this dish and it’s very easy to make…Well, to me, the best thing I like about this dish is the abundance fresh coriander leaves in it, I love that aroma comes out when the dal is mixed with coriander and good stirring is given.

There are so many variations of dal made at each every household (this is the North Indian version), here in this recipe I have used tuvar dal , the dal itself can be replaced and your own version can be made..

  • Tuvar dal – 350 gms
  • Vegetable oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Cumin seeds- 1 Tsp
  • Garlic cloves – 3 each, crushed
  • Onion– 1 medium, chopped
  • Tomato – 1 medium chopped
  • Green chilly – 2 each, chopped(optional)
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tbsp
  • Chilly powder – 3/4 Tbsp
  • Cumin powder – 1/2 Tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves – 1 Tbsp, chopped

  1. Rinse dal thrice and make sure all impurities are removed.
  2. Heat oil in a medium sized pot, add cumin seeds and let infuse the flavor for a minute.
  3. Add chopped onion, stir fry for a couple of minutes.
  4. Add crushed garlic and saute until the flavor becomes apparent.
  5. Add the washed dal to the pot, add enough water.
  6. Add the powdered spices such as turmeric , cumin and chilly and  chopped chilly and tomato too.
  7. Add salt and let cook on a simmering fire.
  8. Make sure to cook the dal well ( I don’t  like it mushy, I like it just cooked and  the shaped is retained).
  9. Once dal is cooked, switch off the fire and add chopped coriander and give a good stirring.
  10. Your dal is ready and serve it hot chapathi and sliced onions.
