Beaches. Sunsets. Cliffs. Silvery Sand. Seafood. Very inviting, isn’t it?

Even though Kerala is the smallest among the southern states in India, it has a very diverse geography. The tropical shores of Kerala are known for its sandy strip of beaches, red cliffs overlooking oceans, fishing villages and of course fresh seafood.

Stretching all the way from Kasaragod district in the north to Trivandrum district in the south, the coastal Kerala has recipes that are unique to each district. The culinary experience varies in every district based on the local ingredients that are available to them.

Nothing annoys a seafood lover than being served an old catch on his/her table. A pescatarian or any hardcore seafood lover can easily identify whether the catch is fresh or not. Here in Kerala, fishing has been a part of its traditional heritage and for them there is nothing better than the freshest catch.

Popular Catches and Recipes

The most sought after catches in Kerala are sardines, mackerel, tuna, prawns, crabs, shrimps and other varieties of fishes. Some of the popular seafood delicacies from Kerala are Chettinad fry fish (This one is for spicy seafood lovers), Mussels or Kallumekkaya UIarthiyathu (A popular dish in the northern Kerala), Karimeen Pollichathu (Pearl spot fish marinated and wrapped in leaves), Prawns fry or Chemmeen Varuthathu and Fish Moilee (Yellow fish stew).
