Chakkakuru Mezhukkupuratti / Sauteed Jackfruit seeds

Many of you will be wondering why chakkakuru has gained it’s popularity recently? The answer is ‘it’s nutritional values’.

Jack fruit is rich in Vitamin A , C, riboflavin, calcium, magnesium, protein, carbobydrates, etc, so as the jack fruit seeds. One should try to include jack fruit seeds at least once in a week.

Chakkakuru mezhukkupuratti is a traditional dish which was very common in every household in the past. Now that it’s unavailability has become an issue, still you can try your luck in some of the super markets around.

Ingredients

  • Chakkakuru – 350 gms, cut lengthwise
  • Coconut oil – 2 Tbsp
  • Shallots – 50 gms, sliced
  • Chilly powder- 1 Tbsp
  • Dried red chilly – 3 pcs
  • Mustard seeds – 1 Tsp
  • Salt to taste.

Directions

  1. Peel the white skin, slice into thick slices as shown the photo (do not remove the brown skin as it contains a lot nutritional values).
  2. In a medium sized pot, bring water to boil, add salt and add sliced jack fruit.
  3. Cook until tender, remove from the fire and strain. Make sure not to over cook as it becomes mushy.
  4. In a skillet, heat oil, add mustard seeds and dried red chilly and saute. You can add curry leaves too.
  5. Add sliced shallots, cook until golden brown. Add cooked chakkakuru, sprinkle chilly powder and cook on a slow fire until it becomesĀ  golden brown in color. Check seasoning and serve.
