Broccoli Thoran

It’s been a while since I have been hooked by the idea of making a broccoli thoran. But then every time I buy broccoli, I either forget to make broccoli thoran or I have to give up my idea since my wife will have something else in her mind already with the broccoli. I would never dare to argue with her then, I guess you know why!?

Well, let me come to the point now-even though broccoli is not easily available in Kerala (you may find it  only in super markets) and if you wonder what to do with broccoli when you find one, then broccoli thoran is the best dish you can try it with. This is a super easy recipe and I would like to ask every one to try to include broccoli into your daily diet, thanks to it’s health benefits.

Ingredients

  • Broccoli – 500 gms
  • Coconut oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Onion – 1 small, chopped
  • Grated coconut – 150 gms
  • Green chilly- 2/3 nos
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Garlic –  2 cloves
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Chilly powder- 1/2 Tsp (optional)
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Wash and cut broccoli into even sized florets, chop onion and keep them aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds first.
  3. Then add curry leaves, let the flavor get infused.
  4. Add chopped onion, green chilly  and cook till it becomes soft.
  5. Add broccoli, reduce the flame, cover with a lid and continue to cook.
  6. Meanwhile, crush together grated coconut, garlic, cumin seeds, turmeric powder and chilly powder in a food processor.
  7. Add the coconut-spice- mix to the broccoli and stir fry over a medium heat.
  8. Adjust the seasoning and serve hot.

Note: Take maximum care while cooking the broccoli, as the broccoli may get over cooked.
