Bitter Gourd Stir Fry/ Pavakka Mezhukkupuratti

We always complain about the bitterness of bitter gourd  and we often overlook the fact that bitter gourd contributes to a hell lot of health benefits. Bitter gourd is good for those who wish to reduce their body weight, helps to improve the immune system, helps in the blood sugar levels, good for liver functions and also a great source Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

I have kept this recipe very simple as I did not add any additional spices except freshly round black pepper. You can skip chilly if don’t want it to be spicy as well.


  • Bitter gourd -600 gms
  • Oil – 1 Tsp
  • Onion– 1 big, sliced
  • Green chilly – 2, chopped
  • Sal to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper


  1. Cut the bitter gourd length wise to remove the seeds and spongy center.
  2. Slice the bitter gourd into thin slices.
  3. Heat oil, saute onion and green chilly.
  4. Add sliced bitter gourd, salt and combine well.
  5. Cover with a lid and cook for about 5-7 minutes.
  6. Remove cover, increase the flame to medium-high and stir fry until the moisture trapped inside is evaporated.
  7. Finish with freshly ground black pepper and serve.
