Baby Shrimps Thoran/ Chemmeen Thoran

Baby shrimps thoran is one of the most traditional recipes from Kerala, baby shrimps are stir fried in mild coconut-spice mix and tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Baby shrimps, these tiny little goodies are so palatable when thoran is made out of them. It’s very difficult to get them though, and when you get them you should definitely try this recipe.  Chemmen thoran is traditionally cooked in earthenware pot, but you can use any cooking vessel of your choice if you can’t find one.

  • Baby shrimps – 300 gms
  • Coconut oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 /2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • green chilly – 2 each
  • Grated coconut- 100 gms
  • Ginger – 1/2 Tsp, grated or crushed
  • Garlic– 2 cloves
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 Tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Wash and remove all the impurities from baby shrimps.
  2. Heat oil and crackle mustard seeds.
  3. Add curry leaves and fry them to infuse the flavor.
  4. Add baby shrimps,green chilly, grated ginger, turmeric powder(1/2 tsp) and chilly powder(1/2 tsp).
  5. Cook on a slow flame.
  6. Crush together grated coconut, salt, garlic, cumin seeds, turmeric powder (1/2 tsp) and chilly powder (1/2 tsp).
  7. Add crushed coconut mix to the shrimps.
  8. Increase the flame and stir-fry for 3-5 minutes.
  9. Adjust seasoning and serve hot.
