Baby Shrimps, Coconut Stir Fry

Baby Shrimps Coconut Stir Fry is one of the most traditional recipes from Kerala, baby shrimps are stir fried in mild coconut-spice mix and tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Baby shrimps, these tiny little goodies are so palatable when stir fried with coconut and good tempering with¬† dried chilly, curry leaves and mustard seeds. It’s very difficult to get them though, and when you get them you should definitely try this recipe.¬† Baby shrimps coconut stir fry is traditionally cooked in earthenware pot, but you can use any cooking vessel of your choice if you can’t find one.

Baby shrimps coconut stir fry recipe..


  • Baby shrimps – 300 gms
  • Coconut oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 /2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • green chilly – 2 each
  • Diced coconut – 1 Tbsp
  • Grated coconut- 100 gms
  • Shallots -1 Tbsp, sliced
  • Ginger – 1/2 Tsp, grated or crushed
  • Garlic– 2 cloves
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Chilly powder – 1 Tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Wash and remove all the impurities from baby shrimps.
  2. Heat oil and crackle mustard seeds.
  3. Add curry leaves and fry them to infuse the flavor.
  4. Stir in diced coconut and shallots. Cook until light golden brown in color.
  5. Add baby shrimps,green chilly, grated ginger, turmeric powder(1/2 tsp) and chilly powder(1/2 tsp).
  6. Cook on a slow flame.
  7. Crush together grated coconut, salt, garlic, cumin seeds, turmeric powder (1/2 tsp) and chilly powder (1/2 tsp).
  8. Add crushed coconut mix to the shrimps.
  9. Increase the flame and stir-fry for 3-5 minutes.
  10. Adjust seasoning and serve hot.

Note: I have used earthenware pot for cooking as the baby shrimp coconut stir fry is made traditionally in earthenware pot, if you can’t get them you can use any vessel of choice.
