Ari Unda/ Sweetened Rice Balls

Ari unda or sweetened rice balls or rice ladoo is one of the most famous and traditional sweets in India. I could easily say that ladoo is one of the  most versatile sweets of India as it can be made of different ingredients and if you travel from one state to another you will always find a different or new variety of ladoo.

Ari unda is most popular form of ladoo in Kerala and there are so many variations of ari unda’s are available.


  • Parboiled rice – 1 cup
  • Jaggery – 2 cups, grated
  • Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom powder-1/2 Tsp
  • Ghee – 1 Tbsp, optional
  • Water  as needed


  1. Boil the jaggery with some water to make a thick syrup.
  2. Strain the syrup to remove any impurities and set aside.
  3. Heat a skillet or kadai.
  4. Fry the rice until it is crisp and brown in color.
  5. Grind the rice to fine powder in a food processor.
  6. In a bowl mix together the powdered rice, jaggery syrup, grated coconut, cardamom powder and ghee.
  7. Once the mixture is completely cooled down, make sized balls.
  8. Serve ari unda with tea or coffee.
